Google's Android 17: A Blurry Evolution or a Design Revolution?
Google is taking Android's visual appeal to new heights with a bold move, blurring the lines between the operating system and its users. Building upon the Material 3 Expressive redesign from last year, Google is now adding a significant amount of blur to Android 17's system UI on Pixel devices. But is this a step towards a more immersive experience or a controversial design choice?
According to internal build images, Google is updating Android's aesthetics with a heavy emphasis on blur. System flags even label this design as 'blur', indicating a deliberate shift. This design language will transform the system UI, replacing solid backgrounds with a blur effect, revealing what's behind the interactive components.
For instance, the volume bar's container will be translucent, showcasing the wallpaper and app icons on your homescreen. When adjusted within an app, you'll glimpse what lies beneath. The volume sheet and power menus are also set to receive this blurred treatment.
But here's where it gets controversial: While Android 17's blur is influenced by your Dynamic Color theme, it's a more subtle redesign compared to Android 16's overhaul. Most components retain their familiar look and functionality, leaving some users wondering if this update is merely a minor refresh.
Google previously introduced blur to Android 16's notification and Quick Settings panels, aiming to create a sense of depth and lightweight motion. Android 17 builds upon this, but its approach is more understated than iOS' Liquid Glass.
