The Washington Capitals: Buyers or Sellers?
In the world of ice hockey, the trade deadline is a time of intense speculation and strategic moves. The Washington Capitals, a team with a rich history and a loyal fan base, find themselves at the center of attention. But here's where it gets controversial: despite being rumored as buyers, there are whispers that the Capitals might be considering trading one of their veteran stars.
According to Pierre LeBrun, a renowned hockey analyst, the Capitals are receiving calls from teams interested in acquiring alternate captain John Carlson. Carlson, a 36-year-old veteran, is set to become an unrestricted free agent in July and is currently sidelined with a lower-body injury. LeBrun's report adds an intriguing twist to the Capitals' trade deadline strategy.
"Sticking with the Caps, I was asked about a surprising name—someone not on everyone's radar—to watch before the deadline. I mentioned John Carlson because a trade involving him would be a shock to many," LeBrun wrote in his "NHL Rumblings" column.
While LeBrun believes a Carlson trade is unlikely, given the Capitals' desire to stay competitive, he acknowledges that Carlson's pending free agency status makes him a target for other teams. "It won't stop teams from calling on him, and I believe some have. It would take a really good offer to get Washington's attention, though," LeBrun added.
Carlson, a two-time NHL All-Star, has been a cornerstone of the Capitals' defense for years. He is currently playing out the final season of an eight-year, $64 million contract he signed with the team in 2018. Despite his age, Carlson remains an effective and productive defenseman, having recorded 46 points (10 goals and 36 assists) in 55 games this season. His impact on the ice is evident in the Capitals' performance metrics, with the team seeing a majority of shot attempts, expected goals, scoring chances, and high-danger chances when Carlson is on the ice at five-on-five.
However, with the emergence of Jakob Chychrun, Carlson's role has slightly diminished, particularly in power-play situations. Chychrun has taken over Carlson's first power-play unit responsibilities, and Carlson is now skating an average of 22:52 minutes per game, just behind Chychrun's 23:41.
As LeBrun suggests, any prospective offer for Carlson would need to be exceptional to entice the Capitals. The team's management will likely assess their position in the Eastern Conference playoff race after their game against the Utah Mammoth on Tuesday night. They won't play again until the day after the trade deadline, giving them time to evaluate their options.
While a Carlson trade may be unlikely, the potential framework of such a deal could mirror or even surpass the Calgary Flames' trade with the Vegas Golden Knights for defender Rasmus Andersson in January. The Flames received defenseman Zach Whitecloud, prospect Abram Wiebe, a 2027 first-round pick, and a conditional 2028 second-round pick in return, with the Flames retaining 50% of Andersson's cap hit.
Carlson's impact on the Capitals cannot be overstated. He is the team's all-time leader among defensemen in games played (1,143), goals (166), assists (605), and points (771). In January, he became only the 21st defenseman in NHL history to record 600 assists.
