Get ready for a blast from the past! Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier, two titans of the UFC, are set to reignite their decade-long rivalry. But instead of trading blows in the Octagon, they'll be facing off as coaches on a reality TV show. This is a story of grudges, wrestling, and the enduring drama of MMA.
The Jones-Cormier feud is legendary. Their battles are etched in MMA history, filled with personal insults, a chaotic press conference brawl, and two unforgettable fights. Their first encounter in 2015 saw Jones winning by decision to retain the light-heavyweight title. Their second fight in 2017, resulted in a knockout victory for Jones, but it was later overturned due to a failed drug test.
But here's where it gets controversial... A trilogy fight was often discussed, but Jones didn't move to the heavyweight division to face Cormier until after Cormier had already retired. Now, they'll finally go head-to-head for a third time, but in a completely different setting.
The UFC legends will be coaching against each other on the upcoming season of a reality TV show, which is like a Russian version of The Ultimate Fighter. Jones previously took on a coaching role on the show opposite former UFC star Nate Diaz, but his time ended abruptly after a brawl erupted on set.
While they won't fight in the Octagon, Cormier has hinted at a wrestling match. "Iβm gonna kick his ass, like you would never believe," Cormier declared on his YouTube channel. He has a stellar wrestling background, representing the United States at the Olympic Games. He finished fourth in freestyle wrestling at Athens 2004 and captained the team at Beijing 2008. Cormier is also one of only four fighters to hold two UFC titles simultaneously.
Cormier hasnβt fought in MMA since his loss to Stipe Miocic in 2020, but he's been training again. Jones also has a strong wrestling base. Widely regarded as one of the greatest MMA fighters, Jones retired last year but plans to return later this year.
Cormier noted that the feud has eased. "Being around Jon Jones is different because we had such a bad history," he said. "But, the reality is, Iβm done fighting now. That part of it is gone, so itβs not nearly as nasty."
And this is the part most people miss... Jones and Cormier's relationship has evolved. They can now be in the same space without wanting to fight. Whether Jones feels the same way remains to be seen. He has taken shots at Cormier on social media over the past six months. What do you think? Are you excited to see these two legends together again, even if it's not in the Octagon?
