Imagine your mentor, the person who believed in you when no one else did, suddenly gone. That's the situation Max Verstappen found himself in after Christian Horner's shocking departure from Red Bull. But despite the drama, Verstappen's loyalty remains strong.
Christian Horner, the man who spearheaded Red Bull's Formula 1 journey since its inception in 2005, was surprisingly ousted in July. In terms of results, there was a bit of unrest... the shareholders also wanted change because they weren't happy." It's a candid admission that the environment had become unsustainable.
He also emphasized the personal connection he forged with Horner. "You've built up a bond with Christian and achieved so much – especially in 2021, those moments too. You'll never forget that. Christian really went through fire for me." This speaks volumes about the depth of their relationship and the challenges they overcame together.
So, are they still in touch? The answer is a resounding yes. Verstappen revealed, "Every week, every race. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday and usually via text message. But also on holiday, for example. Every week." He elaborated, explaining that Horner's messages are often words of encouragement: "'I wish you good luck' and 'I believe in you’ - biggest fan... 'you know you can do it'." And this is the part most people miss... It's not just about racing; they discuss other aspects of life, maintaining a genuine friendship beyond the high-pressure world of Formula 1.
Despite his continued contact with Horner, Verstappen acknowledges the positive impact of the recent changes. "The team is doing well," he stated. "We have a lot of confidence. You see people smiling, it's a nice environment, everyone gets along well and we missed that at one point. The Red Bull style was a bit lost or gone.” When asked directly about the team spirit, he simply affirmed, "Yes, and that has definitely returned." This implies that while he values his relationship with Horner, he recognizes the necessity of the changes for the overall well-being and performance of the team.
What's truly fascinating is how Verstappen navigates this complex situation. He maintains loyalty to his former boss while acknowledging the benefits of a fresh start.
