Ready to dive into the upcoming 2026 MLB season? We're kicking off our annual preview series, breaking down each division and analyzing the reigning champions' chances of repeating their success. Let's get started! But first, a quick question: How many teams managed to win their division titles in both 2024 and 2025? It's a fascinating look at the consistency (or lack thereof) in the MLB landscape.
Here's a glimpse at the recent history of repeat division winners:
- 2025: 4
- 2024: 3
- 2023: 3
- 2022: 2
- 2021: 2
- 2020: 3
- 2019: 3
- 2018: 4
As we head into the 2026 season, will we see a similar trend? Let's take a look at the six division champions from last season, ranked by their likelihood of repeating.
Dodgers (NL West)
- 2025 Record: 93-69, 3 games over Padres
The Dodgers are the frontrunners, but even they have potential hurdles. Their key players are aging, with several stars already in their 30s. Their outfield is projected to be in the bottom half of the league unless they make some moves. They won their division by a smaller margin than in previous years. However, they are the two-time defending World Series champions, and they're likely to make moves to improve their already stacked roster. It's hard to bet against them. They're my pick to win the World Series again this year. So, obviously, they’re the easy choice to top this list. Again. Always, really.

- 2025 Record: 90-72, 3 games over Astros
After finally clinching their first division title since 2001, the Mariners are in a strong position. The Astros are looking less imposing, and the Rangers are in a state of flux. The Mariners should be even better this season, with a healthy pitching staff, MVP candidates like Julio Rodríguez and Cal Raleigh, and a full season of Josh Naylor. They could also make additional offensive upgrades. They are the clear favorites in the division moving forward.
Phillies (NL East)
- 2025 Record: 96-66, 13 games over Mets
The Phillies had some challenges last season, with some key players not performing at their best. Despite this, they still comfortably won their division. The Braves are due for a turnaround, and the Mets are still talented. The Phillies are highly motivated to win and are the class of this division. I’m not sure I’d pick the Phillies in 2028, or maybe even '27. But '26 still feels like their time.
Blue Jays (AL East)
- 2025 Record: 94-68, won tiebreaker over Yankees
The Blue Jays have improved, with additions like Dylan Cease, Tyler Rogers, and Kazuma Okamoto, and are likely to add more talent. However, the division is also leveling up. The Red Sox, Orioles, and Rays are all making moves to improve their teams. The Yankees still have Aaron Judge and are eager to win. This is shaping up to be the best division in baseball. Toronto is still the best team, but it will get challenged from all corners this season.
Brewers (NL Central)
- 2025 Record: 97-65, 5 games over Cubs
The Brewers have won three straight division titles and four of the past five. They might trade staff ace Freddy Peralta. The Cubs, Reds, and Pirates should be better. I'm not sold on the Brewers this season, just like I wasn’t in 2025 and '24 and '23, when I was wrong every single time. I am sure I will be this season as well.
Guardians (AL Central)
- 2025 Record: 88-74, 1 game over Tigers
This division is wide open. Every team has significant questions, particularly on offense. Picking a winner feels like a gamble. Will the Royals, Twins, or Tigers surprise? Will the Guardians repeat? It's anyone's guess. It could be the Guardians, sure. But honestly: Pick a name out of a hat.
