Nicole Kidman on Grief, Loss, and Her New Series 'Scarpetta' (2026)

Nicole Kidman grips grief with careful steadiness in the third act of her career, and she does so with an ease that makes Kay Scarpetta feel real from the first scene. This sense of familiarity isn’t surprising at this point. After shaping multifaceted women in television and film—from Big Little Lies and The Undoing to Expats and The Perfect Couple—Kidman has made portraying complex, layered female leads a defining chapter of her work.

Scarpetta arrives in a two-timeline structure: current moments with Kidman as the seasoned medical examiner, and flashbacks to the detective’s early days played by Rosy McEwen. The project came together in an unexpected meeting of professional and personal paths for Kidman. Jamie Lee Curtis, who co-stars and owns the rights to the books through Comet Pictures, bumped into Kidman, who then proposed the idea. When Kidman shared the project with her sister Antonia, the younger Kidman teased a personal obsession with the stories.

“Antonia loves crime novels; they’re a comforting escape for her, despite a demanding career and family duties. So when I mentioned Scarpetta, she said I absolutely had to do it,” Kidman explains. “Her enthusiasm mirrored the reasons I was drawn to the character.”

Liz Sarnoff, the showrunner, encountered Kay Scarpetta through a different, poignant route: her mother handed her the books.

“For me, those novels opened a world of possibility at a time when women rarely led in any field,” Sarnoff reflects. “Kay stood as a proof that a woman could excel in a male-dominated arena. That message still resonates.” Sarnoff read several Scarpetta volumes to her mother while she was hospitalized, a powerful link that intensified her commitment to the adaptation. When the project surfaced again, she knew she wanted in because of her deep affection for the character and the source material.

The series introduces Kay Scarpetta alongside her sister, Dorothy Farinelli (Curtis). The sisters, each with a distinct temperament, bond over a shared sense of loss—the death of a parent. The parallels to Kidman and Antonia’s real lives are hard to ignore; both sisters endured their mother Janelle’s passing in 2024, just before filming began on Scarpetta.

The timing also overlaps with Kidman’s personal life, as she navigates the divorce from singer Keith Urban, finalized after news of their split in early 2024. Kidman is clear about her wellbeing: “I’m good. I’m holding it steady.”

Kidman explains that Kay Scarpetta’s grief is framed by a central question: why pursue the role of a medical examiner? Kay’s path diverges from Kidman’s own experiences, offering a lens into how different emotional landscapes shape behavior. The actor describes her approach as an ongoing exploration of varied human conditions, noting that her emotional landscape—loss, resilience, longing to move forward, and conflict—has enriched her acting as she continues to grow into a 58-year-old woman.

A notable casting dynamic unfolds with Rosy McEwen taking on the younger Kay. Reactions to McEwen’s portrayal have been overwhelmingly positive, not only for how she embodies the character but also for the ways she echoes Kidman’s presence. Kidman admires McEwen’s preparation and collaboration, describing a shared, evolving process where both actresses study each other’s performances and align through a shared dialect coach and movement consultant. The result is a collaborative “soup” of talents that lends Scarpetta its distinctive energy.

A surprising cameo arrives from Patricia Cornwell, the author of the book series. The writer’s participation left a lasting mark on Kidman. At a New York event ahead of the premiere, Cornwell spoke about the moment she faced the actress delivering Scarpetta to life, admitting nerves but also generosity in handing the character forward. Cornwell’s presence felt like a baton pass—an affirmation that Kidman is now the custodian of Scarpetta’s heart and soul.

Kidman recalls Cornwell’s words as a pledge: “She’s yours now, and when I write her from here on, I see you.” That moment, she says, embodies a spirit of collaboration and mutual support—the essence of a true sisterhood in the industry.

Scarpetta debuts on Amazon Prime Video on March 11.
