Seiya Suzuki's Return: A Hot Streak into the World Baseball Classic (2026)

Suzuki's Year-End Hot Streak Continues in the World Baseball Classic

MESA, Ariz. -- Three years ago, Seiya Suzuki was thrilled to be part of Team Japan's World Baseball Classic journey. However, an unfortunate injury in late February forced him to withdraw, leaving him as an eager spectator as Japan emerged victorious over Team USA in a thrilling final. Now, Suzuki is set to make his return to the Classic, aiming to bring his year-end hot streak to the international stage.

The Cubs' slugger expressed his excitement, stating, 'It's something I've always wanted to do as a kid - play for Team Japan. It's truly special.' Suzuki's passion for representing his country is evident, and he's eager to contribute as one of Japan's offensive weapons.

In 2017, Suzuki made his World Baseball Classic debut at just 22 years old. Despite a 6-1 record, the team fell short in the semifinals against Team USA. Suzuki, however, has long admired Japan's success in the Classic, having watched many of their games on TV as a child, hoping one day to walk in their footsteps.

Fast forward to 2023, and Suzuki was preparing for his second Major League season when a left oblique injury struck in late February. This setback ruled him out of the Classic, but he's now ready to make his mark. Cubs president of baseball operations, Jed Hoyer, expressed hope for Team Japan's chances, acknowledging Suzuki's eagerness to participate this time around.

Team Japan will compete in Pool C, alongside Australia, Chinese Taipei, Czechia, and Korea. Suzuki is expected to remain with the Cubs through the upcoming weekend before joining the team in Tokyo for the Classic on February 23. His potential to play center field for Japan adds an exciting dimension to the team's lineup.

When asked about any friendly banter with Crow-Armstrong, Suzuki playfully responded, 'I want to see Pete throw a helmet, and then if Pete hits a ball to center field, I want to make sure I catch it and dance.'

Suzuki's performance with the Cubs in his fourth MLB season was impressive, setting career highs in home runs (32), RBIs (103), and walks (71), with a .478 slugging percentage in 151 games. His strong finish to the season and postseason performance, including a four-game homer streak, make him a potent bat for Team Japan. Suzuki's ability to excel in high-pressure situations is a valuable asset, and he's eager to contribute to Japan's success in the World Baseball Classic.
