Syria's ongoing struggle with unrest is a complex tapestry of old and new threats, with the government led by President Ahmed al-Sharaa facing a myriad of challenges. The recent explosions in Damascus during French President Emmanuel Macron's visit, which injured 18 people, have raised questions about the sources of this instability. While the responsibility for these bombings remains unknown, conjecture centers on the remnants of the Islamic State (ISIL) group, which still boasts between 1,500 and 3,000 fighters across Syria and neighboring Iraq, according to the United Nations. Personally, I find this particularly fascinating because it highlights the enduring threat of ISIL, which was thought to be largely defeated. What makes this especially interesting is the potential impact on the government's efforts to project a sense of normalcy and attract much-needed foreign investment. From my perspective, these bombings could easily derail the government's attempts to rebuild and stabilize the country. One thing that immediately stands out is the presence of various armed groups and factions in Syria. While al-Sharaa has managed to regain control of most of the country, the rule of law is often maintained by local militias or is barely existent in some areas. This includes areas where the government's control is strongest in the west and center, but weakest along the southern border and in Druze-majority regions. What many people don't realize is that the government's control is not uniform, and there are still pockets of resistance and unrest. This raises a deeper question: How can the government effectively integrate and govern these diverse regions and groups? A detail that I find especially interesting is the role of the Druze community. Matters between the Druze and the local population reached a head in July 2025 when fighting between Druze and local Bedouins spilled over into open conflict. This allowed Israel to intervene on what it claimed was the Druze’s behalf to shell Suwayda after Syrian government forces entered the Druze-majority city. This incident highlights the complex dynamics between different ethnic and religious groups in Syria and the potential for external actors to exploit these tensions. What this really suggests is that the government's ability to maintain stability and integrate diverse groups is a significant challenge. Another internal threat to the government comes from the conservative young men who were critical in helping al-Sharaa seize and sustain power. These men, now mostly unemployed, may feel grievances over a more moderate governmental agenda that emphasizes engagement with the West. This could potentially undermine al-Sharaa's backing among his core constituency and former HTS circle. If you take a step back and think about it, this raises a critical question: How can the government address these internal divisions and maintain the support of its key supporters? In conclusion, Syria's ongoing struggle with unrest is a complex issue with multiple layers of challenges. From external threats like ISIL to internal divisions among different ethnic and religious groups, the government led by President al-Sharaa faces a daunting task in maintaining stability and integrating the country. As an analyst, I believe that the government's ability to address these challenges will be crucial in determining Syria's future trajectory. Personally, I think that the government's success in managing these threats will depend on its ability to engage with diverse groups, address internal divisions, and attract much-needed foreign investment. In my opinion, the outcome of these efforts will significantly impact Syria's future and the lives of its citizens.
