Water Boil Alert: Benton Charter Township Faces Bacterial Contamination Concerns
Benton Harbor Township, MI (WSBT) - A water boil notice has been issued, prompting residents to take precautionary measures due to potential bacterial contamination.
The township is urging residents to refrain from drinking the water without boiling it first. This precautionary measure is essential to ensure the water is safe for consumption and to prevent any potential health risks. The boiled water should be used for essential activities such as drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and preparing food.
The water system encountered an issue when it lost pressure just before 1:00 AM on January 17th, attributed to a distribution pump failure. This incident led to the possibility of bacterial contamination in the area west and north of the Southwest Michigan Regional Airport.
Cathy Yates, the Benton Charter Township Supervisor, provided an update on the situation. She explained that a frozen veil is causing the issue and that efforts are underway to thaw it. A company has been dispatched to assist, and water production is currently underway. However, certain steps must be completed before the boil order can be lifted.
Yates assured residents that the township is working diligently to resolve the problem. She mentioned meeting with EGLE twice that day and would continue discussions the following day. The township is closely monitoring the situation and following protocols to ensure the safety of all water users.
