Could the Yankees Be Eyeing a Trade for Brewers Star Pitcher?
The New York Yankees recently missed out on signing the highly sought-after Japanese pitcher Tatsuya Imai, a significant player in this offseason's free agency market. While this setback might seem daunting, it opens up new possibilities for the Yankees as they continue their quest to enhance their starting rotation.
In an intriguing forecast by Zach Pressnell from Newsweek, there's speculation that the Yankees could potentially trade for Freddy Peralta, the ace of the Milwaukee Brewers. Pressnell suggests, "The Yankees have the opportunity to bundle several promising prospects to secure this standout pitcher. Bringing Peralta into the fold would alleviate some of the burdens faced by current pitchers like Gerrit Cole and Clarke Schmidt, both of whom are on the mend from serious injuries."
Peralta's Remarkable Performance in 2025
Freddy Peralta, a 29-year-old right-handed pitcher, had what many consider the finest season of his career last year, positioning himself among the elite pitchers in Major League Baseball. With an impressive record of 17 wins and only 6 losses—ranking fourth in the league—he boasted a stellar earned run average (ERA) of 2.70, placing him seventh overall. Furthermore, he struck out 204 batters, the ninth most in the league, and achieved a WHIP (walks plus hits per innings pitched) of 1.08, which stands as the thirteenth best figure. Notably, Peralta also recorded a career-high Wins Above Replacement (WAR) of 5.5, tying for the seventh-best mark across MLB, while allowing merely 53 earned runs, a three-year low for him.
Pressnell commented, "If the Yankees haven't reached out to the Milwaukee Brewers about Freddy Peralta yet, they certainly should. He is undeniably one of baseball's top pitchers at present and has found himself available for trade due to his expiring contract."
For the upcoming season, Peralta is set to earn $8 million, wrapping up his five-year deal worth $15.5 million with the Brewers.
Potential Yankees Rotation for 2026
Should Peralta join the Yankees, he would seamlessly integrate into their five-man rotation come Opening Day. He would likely share the mound with Max Fried, Will Warren, Luis Gill, and Cam Schlittler, while Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodón, and Clarke Schmidt continue their recovery journeys.
However, Pressnell notes that the Brewers may request one of the Yankees' current starters in addition to several prospects in exchange for Peralta. He elaborates, "The Brewers will probably seek a starter, such as Will Warren, plus a package of prospects in return for Peralta. If the Yankees can negotiate a contract extension with him, pursuing a trade would be a wise move, especially now that Imai is off the board."
At this juncture in the offseason, securing another starting pitcher appears to be the Yankees' best strategy. They have also been linked to Michael King, a free agent starter from the San Diego Padres, but reports indicate that the Yankees did not extend an offer to him.
In addition, names like Sandy Alcantara of the Miami Marlins, MacKenzie Gore from the Washington Nationals, and two-time Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal of the Detroit Tigers have surfaced in discussions regarding potential trades for the Yankees.
